Stainlees steel Weldability
Assorted welding problems exist with the different grades> Fusion welding should be avoided if possible on the martensitics. Modern feritics are fusion welded. Thousands of tons are resistance or arc welded annualy for automobile exhaust system, but mostly of the ferritics are prone to grain growthat welding temperatures. This make the metal weak and cracking may result under solidification stresses. Second, the impact strength of coarsened, heat affected bassis metal may be very poor. Third, straight chromium stainles steel are subject to 475 C embrittlement and sigma phasa formation. Certain of the special ferritics can be raedily welded, but weldability of each alloy should be investigated with the alloys supplier.
